Matthew Macfadyen: Mac the knife

EXPRESS

Published: Sun, November 10, 2

Ripper Street is definitely not suitable for children. All those gory Victorian murders are the stuff of nightmares, so it’s just as well for actor Matthew Macfadyen that eight-year-old Maggie and seven-year-old Ralph are distinctly unimpressed by their father’s career. Have they seen any of his stuff? “Er, now and again,” says the 6ft 3in actor, “but they’re not really interested. I wish they were sometimes, but they’re not. The most boring thing they could watch is Daddy. They’d rather see Despicable Me 2.”

Macfadyen, married for nine years to his Spooks co-star Keeley Hawes, happily pulled on the three-piece suit and bowler hat of Detective Inspector Edmund Reid for the return of BBC1’s Monday night murder thriller. But he has no illusions that he could do the job for real.“Every role you play, you sort of imaginatively jump into it, so you think, ‘Yeah, I could be a soldier,’ or whatever. You’ve got to believe in it and take it seriously, at least a little bit. But that’s the joy of this job. You can dip a toe into another world – and often you meet the people who do that job for a living, so you get some amazing insights – and then you can dip out again, safely and happily. But be a real policeman? Of course I couldn’t. I’d be hopeless. I’m just not clever enough.”

Instead, the Norfolk-born son of an actress and an oil executive has been honing his stagecraft since he enrolled at RADA at 17. Now 38, he has compiled an impressive CV that includes a number of Shakespeare roles and Noel Coward’s Private Lives on stage – when he co-starred with Kim Cattrall – plus Pride & Prejudice and Anna Karenina on film, and everything from Spooks to Pillars of the Earth via Ashes to Ashes and Little Dorrit on telly. It’s the success of Ripper Street that has really raised his profile, however. “I don’t get stopped in the street very often but it does happen a little more now,” he says. “Since this show started, people stop me and say they love it and I’m so glad they do. It’s a lovely feeling to get good feedback.”

Not everyone, it has to be said, has been able to stomach all that gore. “But you shouldn’t sugar-coat it,” argues Macfadyen.  “There are boundaries of taste, I suppose, but a bit of blood and guts is all right.”Ripper Street series two finds Edmund Reid in “a pretty dark place,” says the actor. Sergeant Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn) is still by his side, “but Reid is no longer living at home, he’s living in his office and he’s pretty lonely. Jerome’s character is married and he’s happy. He’s enjoying domestic bliss with his new wife, which is a bit of a turnaround from the first series. But Reid’s wife isn’t around any more and we don’t know why – well, not yet anyway. So he throws himself into his work.”

Downton Abbey alum Dan Stevens to play Lancelot in Night at the Museum 3

UP AND COMERS
November 8, 2013 | Posted by Linda Ge in Casting

Dan Stevens continues to make the most of his post-”Downton Abbey” time, now booking a major role in threequel “Night at the Museum 3.” Deadline reports Stevens will play Lancelot – like out of Arthurian legend – opposite Ben Stiller as security guard turned entrepreneur (turned security guard again?) Larry Daley.

The third installment in the family-friendly comedy/action franchise will see Stiller’s Larry across the pond, dealing with museum exhibits at the London Museum coming to life. Somehow his old buddy Theodore Roosevelt – well, a statue of him, anyway – played by Robin Williams also gets shipped over too, so I’m betting we can expect other familiar faces like Owen Wilson’s tiny cowboy and Rami Malek’s ancient Egyptian pharaoh Ahkmenrah to make an appearance too. Lancelot is described as a pivotal role. I just hope he’ll have a Guinevere! Filming under Shawn Levy is expected to begin in early 2014.

Tom has to answer a rather interesting question (Picture: YouTube)

The bromance between Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth has taken an interesting new turn as Tom revealed he knows what Chris looks like without any clothes on.

The actor played truth or dare with MTV News host Josh Horowitz as part of a sleepover, with Josh firing an awkward ‘truth’ question at him.

Horowitz asked: ‘Have you ever seen Chris Hemsworth naked?’ to which Tom replied ‘Yes’ before giggling and burying his face in his hands.

The Thor: The Dark World star said: ‘I feel I do need to explain because otherwise it’s weird. He showed me a very funny picture of him with his baby and it was an illustration of how small she was.

‘His wife took the picture. It’s all fine. It’s PG. It was hilarious.’

Horowitz also made the actor choose whether he would ‘f**k, marry or kill’ Thor characters Odin, Heimdall or Thor before daring him to dance.

You know how it is living in New York City. One minute it’s all 21st century hustle and bustle, and then you step outside your door to discover you've been transported back to the 1900s. Some residents of Downtown Manhattan are certainly feeling that way thanks to Steven Soderbergh’s Cinemax series, The Knick.

The ten-episode show about New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital in 1900, starring Clive Owen, required a transformation of a portion of Manhattan to do some filming. The pilot episode is written by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler and will introduce viewers to the doctors and nurses of The Knick who, “Push the bounds of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics.”

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch looks the part on the set of his new film, The Imitation Game.

Playing the role Alan Turing - the  scientist credited with cracking the German Enigma Code during World War II - these new pictures show that Cumberbatch looks period picture perfect.

The 37-year-old sports a long overcoat, classic swept hair and even has a rickety bicycle to navigate the 1940s streets of London.

The biopic follows the logician as he tries to decipher the code and also stars Keira Knightley as Joan Clark, who Turing was briefly engaged to.

November 8, 2013 at 6:31 am

Madalina Ghenea’s personal life is rife with all kinds of rumors: the last time there was speculation that she broke up with Gerard Butler and, although it is unlikely, that she got engaged with A.S. Roma footballer Marco Borriello.

Now, the “Dom Hemingway” actress is rumored to be dating “Inglourious Basterds” actor Michael Fassbender.

Still as attractive as ever: Michael Fassbender still has no trouble attracting women, despite his recent revelations that he's 'selfish' in relationships

The Daily Mail has published photos of the 36-year-old actor showing him in the company of Madalina Ghenea, although the British journalists have not identified who was in the picture, presenting her as a “mystery woman.”

The two were spotted in New Zealand, where the actor is currently shooting new film “Slow West.”

Fassbender admitted in an interview for November’s GQ magazine that his relationships usually don’t last too long because of his work.

Back to work: Michael has bee in New Zealand shooting his new movie Go West, about a mysterious traveller in 19th Century frontier America

Downton Abbey Series 4 Spoilers: (PICTURES)

UNREALITY PRIMETIME
November 7th, 2013 by Anna Howell.

downton-5

It’s hard to believe that this Sunday will see the last instalment of the current series of Downton Abbey, but before the depressions starts sinking in we still have a whopper of an episode to look forward to – and we have some pics to show you in advance!

We were all left shocked by the fact the not only is Lady Edith pregnant, but that she is not married to the father as he is not only missing, but still married to someone else!

Last week’s episode saw Edith (Laura Carmichael) confide in her aunt Rosamund (Samantha Bond) the news as well as enlisting her company while she visited an illegal doctor to have the problem solved.

However, when sat waiting to be seen Edith made a snap decision not to go ahead with the termination, running out of the building, leaving us all wondering just what she was going to do next!

As well as pictures of some of the downstairs staff there is also a selection of pictures from a Downton sports day which seems to have most people in jolly good spirits, but being the final episode we can’t help but wonder if the joy will last! Finally and another hot piece of gossip for you is that, after their secret date last week, Lady Rose (Lily James) is planning to marry jazz singer Jack Ross (Gary Carr), the show’s first ever black character.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Meryl Streep is extraordinary

XPOSE
Thursday, 7 November 2013

Benedict Cumberbatch is in awe of his August: Osage County co-star Meryl Streep's acting ability.

Benedict Cumberbatch found it difficult to "actually act" in Meryl Streep's presence.

The 37-year-old British actor stars alongside the Academy Award-winning actress in forthcoming film August: Osage County.

Benedict was completely blown away by Meryl's performance and he admits her professional magnificence was distracting.

"Meryl was extraordinary," he told website Your Tango.

"The hardest thing with her is to actually act. You just want to sit and watch her. You want to be in the audience."

August: Osage County is a black comedy based on a play written by Tracy Letts about a dysfunctional family led by a powerful group of women. After a death in the family, the relatives reunite only to engage in more conflict.

Julia Roberts is part of Osage County's all-star cast and the actress previously revealed she is also intimidated by Meryl's skills.

"To work with Meryl is a dream, to know her is an honour -- and it was intimidating to have scenes where I'm choking her," she laughed at a press conference for the release, according to New York Daily News.

Downton Abbey series four pictures

Downton Abbey series 4 comes to an exciting head this Sunday with the much-awaited season finale, and we're already gearing up for an explosive one.

In the most exciting news of the week, we may be seeing another Downton Abbey engagement after a certain Lady falls victim to the charms of a less-than-suitable gent…

*Spoiler alert*

Sadly, we're not talking about Lady Mary finally saying yes to her dishy new suitor Lord Gillingham, or giving in to her obvious attraction to the difficult-yet-intriguing Charles Blake. Instead, it's Lady Rose's turn for some happy news.

We witnessed Rose and singer Jack Ross growing closer in last weekend's episode, when the two characters shared a romantic boat ride together.

TV ACTOR Martin Clunes was the special guest at an open day hosted by a charitable organisation which looks after retired racehorses.

Martin, star of hit shows such as Men Behaving Badly and Doc Martin, was joined by his wife Philippa at the Racehorse Rehoming Centre at Combe St Nicholas for the event on Sunday.

They officially opened a new barn which has become home to some of the centre’s horses as a stable block.

The centre rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes former racehorses with the aim of giving them a worthwhile future.

Martin, a big horse fan, said: “It gives us enormous pleasure to declare this lovely barn well and truly open.

“Amazing work is done here to look after and care for these horses, which could easily fall through the net and come to a horrible end.”

Martin and his wife unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the opening of the new stable block and he joked: “I’m so pleased – they’ve spelt my name right!”

But Trubridge promised it will still be packed full of excitement as she revealed it is the most ‘spectacular’ one yet.

‘It is packed full of story and it is without question the biggest episode we have ever done,’ she revealed. ‘it is the most spectacular, it’s not set at Christmas and we won’t be splitting up the family and the servants this time.’

The Christmas special will follow on from the cliffhangers of the fourth series’ finale, which airs this Sunday.

But it will also see the return of Shirley Maclaine as Cora’s mother Martha, and the arrival of Paul Giamatti as Cora’s playboy brother Harold.

‘It is lovely how happy Shirley was to come back and Paul is just a dream, you can’t take your eyes off him,’ Trubridge added.
